Old shows and warm fuzzies
Title: Shows from the 90s and early 2000s
Recently, I have found myself gravitating towards shows from the 90s and early 200s and being less interested in the new, more popular shows that get all of the hype and attention. Love Island? Severance? Squid Games? They are cool and all, but I don't get the warm fuzzies watching those shows. Old shows, though? It's a comforting feeling to see these characters on screen, with their imperfections and perhaps not-so-politically correct speech. Nowadays, everything is scrutinized with such intensity-God forbid there be a bit that offends someone. Now I'm not saying shows made during those decades were always appropriate...the tone-deaf humor is definitely there. South Park, Sex and the City, and The Office have made millions off their jaw-dropping deadpan jokes and skits. But they were funny...and relatable. And sometimes wrong in the eyes of what is "right" today. Even the heartfelt Gilmore Girls, which I love, has been criticized because it doesn't fit with today's social norms. For example, GG- which is incredibly comforting and peaceful, has its moments too! It lacks inclusivity. Yes, I totally agree with that. It's very much a country club member, white-dominated. It's also super fake because who would be so lucky to live in a world that perfect (a girl can dream). Who doesn't love a few episodes of Boy Meets World or 7th Heaven when they are feeling down? I just don't see the value of picking the shit out of things until everyone feels warm and fuzzy inside...why do all harmless discomforts have to be a "thing." The world is not a warm and fuzzy place. It's fucking brutal, and those were just shows. When I want to feel brutal, I WILL put on Squid Games and watch people fight for their lives. Then still, I prefer to read my trauma in books. Old shows? I like the vibe, the grittiness of the production, the fake laugh tracks in the background of sitcoms like Will & Grace. Now that show made strides- inclusivity, and still funny. See? It's not that hard. On that note, let me get back to watching my reruns of Roseanne. The funniest, white trash show ever made.
